Halloween is almost here and there are lots of scary things that come along with the season. However, visiting the audiologist definitely should not be one of them. The experts at Kenwood Hearing are here to reassure you that there is nothing to fear about coming to the audiologist. Learn more about audiologists and what to expect during your appointment.
What is An Audiologist?
Wikipedia defines an audiologist as, “a health-care professional specializing in identifying, diagnosing, treating and monitoring disorders of the auditory and vestibular system portions of the ear. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and/or treat hearing, tinnitus, or balance problems. They dispense, manage, and rehabilitate hearing aids and assess candidacy for and map cochlear implants. They counsel families through a new diagnosis of hearing loss in infants, and help teach coping and compensation skills to late-deafened adults”. When you understand what something is, then it makes it less scary.
What to Expect
An audiologist’s exams are non-invasive and pain free. You should schedule at least an hour for your audiology visit and arrive a few minutes early to fill out some paperwork and details about your medical and family history. Bring your ID and a list of your medications with you. Meet our hearing professionals by reading about them on our About Us page. During your visit, we will discuss your medical history and current hearing concerns before examining your ears and ear canals. Then, we will conduct the hearing assessment which includes listening to a series of sounds and words so that we can determine if you have any hearing loss, and if so, what type of hearing loss and the degree.
If it is determined that you have hearing loss, we will discuss the treatment options with you and either refer you a specialist or recommend hearing aids. If hearing aids are what you need to help you hear better, then we will schedule a second appointment for your hearing aid consultation.
