Can I Use Headphones with Hearing Aids?

Once you get your new hearing aids, you likely will want to start enjoying all the things you might have missed. No doubt, one of the things on the list is listening to music with headphones. You might be wondering, “Can I use headphones with hearing aids”? The answer is a resounding yes! Read on to learn the options you have available.

Types of Headphones that Work with Hearing Aids

There are three types of headphones that you can use if you wear hearing aids.

  1. Over-Ear Headphones: This is the type of headphone that fits over the ears entirely. Noise-cancelling headphones are over-ear headphones. The noise cancellation feature is excellent for protecting your ears from future hearing loss. If you have these four hearing aid styles, they work best with over-ear headphones:
    • In-the-ear (ITE)
    • In-the-canal (ITC)
    • Behind-the-ear (BTE)
    • Receiver-in-canal (RIC)
  2. On-Ear Headphones: These headphones don’t completely cover the ear, but sit on the ear with the opening in the center of the headphones sitting over hearing aids that fit inside the ear. The types of hearing aid styles that on-ear headphones work best with are:
    • Completely-in-canal (CIC)
    • Invisible-in-the-canal (IIC)
  3. Bone-Conduction Headphones: These are specialized headphones that employ new technology where your headphones perform the role of your ear drum. The types of hearing aid styles that work best with bone-conduction headphones are:
    • In-the-ear (ITE)
    • In-the-canal (ITC)
    • Completely-in-canal (CIC)
    • Invisible-in-the-canal (IIC)

Another exciting new option for listening to music is turning your hearing aids into your own personal headphones by streaming music digitally into your hearing aids.
