Types of Hearing Aids

There are several different types of hearing aids, and choosing the right size and style is important when selecting your hearing instrument. At Kenwood Hearing Center, our hearing care professionals can discuss your needs and recommend one or more type of hearing device depending on your level and type of hearing loss, aesthetic preferences, lifestyle needs and budget. The visibility of the hearing aid device may vary based on your ear’s anatomy.

Invisible In The Canal (IITC)

Invisible-in-the-Canal hearing aids are custom built to your ear and are nearly invisible. These types of hearing aids make inserting and removing your device very easy, and because the device is placed in the ear canal, wind and other similar noise are virtually eliminated.

Behind The Ear (BTE)

Behind-the-Ear or BTE style hearing aids can be used for all types of hearing loss, from mild to profound. BTE hearing aids are fit behind or on top of the ear. An ear hook attached to a tube that runs from the hearing aid to the entrance of the ear canal. The tubing is held in place in the ear canal by an earmold. The earmold is custom-molded for each individual. Most of them offer advanced directional microphones for improved understanding of speech in noisy situations.

Receiver In The Ear (RITE)

Receiver-in-the-Canal hearing aids are one of the most common types on the marketing today. Instead of resting behind the ear, the receiver is placed within the canal. These RIC hearing aids are particularly small, light, and inconspicuous and allows the user to enjoy optimal sound quality.

In The Canal (ITC)

In-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids fit directly in the concha also known as the bowl of the ear. With this type, the body of the hearing aid remains on top of and slightly behind the ear, but the receiver or speaker portion of the device is moved from the primary casing to inside the ear canal. They are much smaller than a full size In-the-Ear hearing aid and can accommodate nearly any type of hearing loss except those most profound. In-the-Canal hearing aids are normally produced without a volume control, since the product automatically adjusts for different listening environments.

Completely In The Canal (CIC)

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) hearing aids are worn completely within the ear canal. This style if hearing aid is most effective when treating mild-to-moderate hearing loss. These are popular as they provide the benefit of improved hearing, with nearly no visibility.

In The Ear (ITE)

In-the-Ear hearing aids can be an effective solution for almost all types of hearing loss. All components reside within a lightweight plastic shell which makes it simple to insert and remove. Their bigger size accommodates a variety of feature options, including special controls that are easy to adjust to the current listening environment.
