Effective this past January (2017), the US Dept of Justice issued new rules for movie theaters – they must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by providing closed captioning during their movies. This applies only to movies shown in digital format, but the theater mus also notice the public that they are equipped to provide these services, and staff must be trained and able to use it. Theaters have until June 2018 to be in compliance with the new rules. So, if closed captioning is something you rely on to “hear” your favorite TV shows and movies, you should now be able to utilize that same technology in the movie theaters! Don’t be afraid to ask the staff at your local theater if this service is available to you yet – the more they know their community needs this service, perhaps the quicker they are to comply!
